National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)

  • It is a national-level scholarship program, introduced in 1963.
  • It is the most prestigious examinations in India conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) at the Secondary school level to identify and recognize students with high intellect and academic talent.
  • The examination is conducted in 2 stages every year.
  • Almost 5,00,000 students appear every year and 2,000 scholarships are awarded.
?The number of NTSE scholarships has been increased from 1000 to 2000 beginning from this year. A total of 2000 students will be shortlisted for the NTSE 2019 scholarships. 


It is held in two stages: stage 1  and stage 2. The first stage is conducted at the state level by SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) or DERT (Directorate of Educational Research and Training) of respective states and union territories.
Students who qualify stage 1 exam will appear for the
 stage 2 exam which is conducted by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). 


Eligibility Criteria :

  • Class X students can apply for Stage 1.
  • Candidate must be studying in a recognized school in their respective State or Union Territory.
  • Those who are registered in Open Distance Learning (ODL) program will also be considered eligible. If they are below 18 years of age (as on July 1, of the particular year) and are not employed when they appear for Class X exam. ?

NTSE 2019 Examination Pattern :

  1. This Year for both the stages (Stage-1 & 2), the exam will be divided into two papers i.e. Mental Ability Test and Scholastic Aptitude Test comprising of 100 questions of 100 marks each.
  2. The duration will be 120 minutes for each paper.
  3. The paper will be conducted through offline mode only and there will be no  negative marking in stage 2 examination.

Reservation Criteria :
  • NTSE 2019 has added an extra reservation of 27% for OBC (Non creamy Layer) apart from the existing 15%, 7.5% and 4% for SC, ST and Physically Handicapped respectively. ?

About Scholarships :

About 2000 scholarships are awarded for different stages of education :
  • Scholarship of Rs 1250 per month for class XI to XII.
  • Scholarship of Rs 2000 per month for Undergraduate and postgraduate.
  • Amount of scholarship for Ph. D is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms.
